Let’s take it back to day one…
I had a vision, a laptop, some serious design passion and absolutely no idea what I was doing when it came to running a true service based business.
If you’re dreaming of launching your own creative business or you’re knee-deep in client work wondering why it still feels chaotic, this one’s for you. Here are 3 things I really wish I had known before diving into web design full-time.
1. Pretty ≠ Profitable
I used to obsess over the aesthetics. Fonts, colors, Pinterest boards, the vibe. And while all that’s important (yes, branding matters!) a beautiful website won’t do much for your business if it’s not also strategic.
A site that looks good but doesn’t lead people to take action is just… digital decor if you will.
Your website should work for you, guiding your dream clients to trust you, connect with you, and actually book you. That’s where thoughtful design meets storytelling and sales psychology. And that’s a magical combination. I didn’t realize that I hadn’t connected the dots of design and strategy all in one until my first booked website. My first client paid me a whopping $3,000 and I freaked tf out with imposter syndrome. When I started researching I recognized I actually knew a lot MORE about sales psychology than I thought I did. And I married my creative design with the business psychology (that I quite literally got a degree in) and have had very very happy clients ever since.
2. You Don’t Need to Offer Everything
In the beginning, I offered everything under the sun: logos, social templates, brand boards, mini websites, PDFs… I said yes to everything. Literally if you needed it, I would do it.
But here’s what changed everything, when I simplified my offers and marketing and drove one core service, strategic website design, I got more aligned clients, more consistent inquiries, and more income.
Saying no felt so scary and honestly just straight up unnatural as a recovering people pleaser. But once I stopped being everything for everyone, I started being exactly what someone needed.
3. The Best Clients Are Passed DIY
Some of my favorite clients are the ones who’ve already tried to build their own site. They’re over the endless Canva templates and YouTube tutorials. They dread having to make changes or updates. They want a professional who can take it off their plate and do it right.
So if you’re worried no one will pay you what you’re worth, remember this: your dream clients are out there. They just need to hear how you can help them.
Final thoughts, starting a creative business is not easy but it gets better when you just start. Build with strategy, clarity, and intention and hopefully these tips help you from learning the hard way, like me.
If you’re ready to finally have an online home that feels like you and sells for you, I’d love to help.
You’re more ready than you think.
